Despite financial and infrastructural challenges, Pakistani industry has produced some truly extraordinary performances, both in film and TV. Some of the actors deserved far more appreciation than they received when they first went on air or hit the big screens. And that is why these 10 Pakistani performances have stolen the show and left a lasting impression even after years. Zahid Ahmed as Sameer in Ishq Zahe Naseeb (TV, 2019) Zahid Ahmed's Sameer was one of the most demanding performances ever in TV and film combined. Not only because the role was never played before, but it was a double character played by a single person whose alternate personalities affected others. He played a successful businessman, Sameer, living with dissociative identity disorder and transformed into...

Rising to fame in The Netherlands with the short Munya in Mij (Munya in Me) she did her first music video before she did any feature work, for The Prodigy's Wild Frontier. But her two features to date Knor (Oink) and...

Long painterly strokes form a border, and a crude face with life-preservers as eyes, while the fat hand-drawn title and credits occupy the top, and the credit block is subtly embedded in blue wavy water at the bottom. The power here is both its simplicity, as well as the fact that it is different from just about everything out there at the moment. It evokes the imagery and style of Polish designer&nbsp;Barbara &ldquo;Bacha&rdquo; Baranowska, specifically her work...

<title>Echoes: Who Decides What Pakistan Gets to Watch? </title>

Objections may be raised over content that includes obscenity, violence, extremism, religious sensitivities, threats to public order, and material considered contrary to national or cultural values. The Legend of Maula Jatt (2022) is one recent example that faced problems passing PEMRA requirements due to violence; Javed Iqbal (2022) is another example that threatened the country's law and order, while Sarmad Sultan Khoosat's Zindagi Tamasha (2019's...

What does Spider-Man: Brand New Day have in common with Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma? Oddly enough, both films, released this summer -- one a queer slasher, the other a two-billion dollar grossing MCU entry -- use the exact same piece of visual symbolism to represent female dissociation. [Read our review by Lou Cai.] It's something that has bothered me ever since I walked out of Camp Miasma -- and something actually asked about during the post-screening Q&A, only to have the question promptly deflected: Why does Little Death wear a ceiling vent as a mask? When it comes to slashers, I am a sucker for lore, probably for the same reason Jane Schoenbrun is. Why was this mask chosen? Why does the...

Honoured with Locarno's Pardo d'Onore, Darren Aronofsky reflects on turning poverty into style, surviving "movie jail," casting actors at the right moment and learning when to let a film go.

Last month's big-budget blockbusters The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are still playing at multiplexes nationwide, but for those in search of something new and different, we have a few recommendations for you. First is a mind-bender that starts routinely and then steadily becomes extraordinary. You won't want to miss It Ends. I saw the film at SXSW last year and agree completely with our critic J Hurtado, whose review is linked below. I have not yet seen the sci-fi thriller Hot Spot, nor the ghost story Insidious: Out of the Further, nor the Jason Statham action picture Mutiny nor the fevered Kafka bio-pic Franz nor the Anthony Bourdain slice-of-life bio-pic Tony nor the horror pic Blood Shine nor the drama How to Divorce...

<title>Echoes: Why Did It Take So Long For Lollywood to Make Its First Zombie Movie?</title>

The Pakistani filmmaking industry has a long-held tendency to make safe, risk-free, family-oriented commercial films. Romantic comedies and social dramas are a more favored formula that filmmakers are inclined to opt for rather than taking an experimental route for zombie films. Chains hang from each side of the frame, coupled to restraints as Vanessa Redgrave has her arms raised high, containing the title and credit block in a very handsome bit of typesetting. The contrast of the black habit, the flesh-tones, and the light cream, in which her clothes fade into the negative space. NC-17 is tucked down in the bottom, just to...

It truly made me jump out of my seat, as such clean artistry was totally unanticipated. While stylistic and resource constraints still exist compared to Hollywood, Zombeid's director, Nabeel Qureshi, kept the technical...

    <title>Friday One Sheet: WILDWOOD</title>

The official poster for Laika&#39;s upcoming animated feature, Wildwood is a beauty. Kind of a minimalist collage, with bird-induced verticality to it. Showcasing the lead characters, the inciting incident (stolen baby) and the background location (from Portland, Oregon to the eponymous fantasy kingdom) this key art is doing a lot of work with a fair bit of restraint. Alas, there is no credit block, but then again, given the slight gradient white/grey space, perhaps it is for the best here. The post has a misty-fogginess to its mood and style without laying it on too thick. It is rumoured that Wildwood will be the longest runtime stop-motion feature ever made, and Laika is staying true to the non-A.I. tagline, &quot; From the hands that made Coraline.&quot;...

<title>Echoes: After ZOMBEID, Can Pakistan Build Its Own Horror Universe? </title>

Let me be straightforward here: Yes, it certainly can make its own horror universe after Zombeid (2026), since the ending indicates the possibility of a sequel. Films have the potential of getting a sequel and eventually becoming a franchise if they generate massive box office returns, which stands true for Zombeid. There are unresolved narratives, leaving central mysteries and conflicts open-ended. The setting created a deep lore, opening doors for exploration in a richly built world that has a broad demographic appeal. There is one aspect that could create trouble for the Zombeid horror universe, however, as it failed to achieve it in its first part. Audiences should feel a deep emotional attachment to the protagonists or villains, which is only possible if there are...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we discuss a few music videos made by John Maclean. Recently I wrote two Sound and Visions where the director had a weird claim to fame: John Carney was the rare director who himself was a band member of a famed band (The Frames) who he has directed music videos for; and Yoshihiro Nishimura was the sole director in the Sound and Visions who remade one of his music videos as a feature length film. That is, till this Sound and Vision, cause John Maclean combines the two outliers into one person: he is a band member for both The Beta Band and The Aliens, who...

No, not that Wicker Man. Today&#39;s poster is from a different kind of folklore, based on the short story from Ursula Wills wherein an outcast woman in a fishing village commissions a husband to be made out of wicker. Pygmalion, but with reversed genders. What could possibly go wrong? The fine poster here emphasizes the texture and the tension of a binding act. At the bottom of the face, the unwoven strands blend neatly into coarse facial hair. It is a nice touch, which is all fine and good, but I would like to also point out the addition of the human fingers. These are presumably the woman&#39;s (Olivia Colman), but could also be the creator or the creation. They have grit and dirt under...

Our primary focus remains the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada, but not all of us could make the trip this year, so instead we cast our eyes on what opened in movie theaters today. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey continues to dominate social media and online media coverage, and deservedly so. Beyond that very large elephant in the room, we hasten to point out that other worthy genre films are worth watching. The new releases are highlighted by new films by Nicolas Winding Refn and Hirokazu Kore-eda. Alternately, a serial killer classic by Michael Mann will be returning to select theaters in an undoubtedly chilling 4K restoration, as well as the intriguing Australian thriller Cruel Hands and a new take on a legendary puppet,...

Books, Books, Books! The beige and paper tones of the poster for Brunello, the latest film from Giuseppe Tornatore are something to get lost in. The sheer volume of this poster is impressive in and of itself.&nbsp;&nbsp; A hybrid documentary on the famous fashion designer-philosopher, and the so-called &quot;King of Cashmere&quot; Brunello Cucinellii, from the director of the cinema classic Cinema Paradiso, is enough to get many into the cinema, and dropping this marvel of a one-sheet is brilliant icing on the cake. The title and text and credit block at the bottom has the good sense to stay out of the way of this image, and is tucked down in the shadows of the stacks of books. Some local stars debated among themselves that Pakistani content is not ready to meet the standards of global streaming giants, due to the absence of widely relatable narratives or technical expertise. In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we discuss the works of AG Rojas. AG Rojas is a director I long wanted to talk about, but per my own set rules I couldn't, as he only released music videos. And for a Sound and Vision there needs to be a cinematic counterpoint to lynchpin the whole article on. Luckily, last year AG Rojas released a mid-length feature called Pare De Sufrir, that is now available for everyone to see on its own website. Pare de Sufrir is vintage AG Rojas. Ochre and clay and sulphur, oh my!&nbsp; The poster for Agnieszka Smoczynska&#39;s big budget Artificial Intelligence dystopian sci-fi thriller, Hot Spot, is from&nbsp;Gravillis, the design house who did yeoman&#39;s work on the campaigns for Sinners and Obsession in the past year.&nbsp; The wavy, reality distorted deserted landscapes -- the tagline, &quot; The system Is unstable&quot; in a white computer, but not too-computer font seems to confirm this -- and posed characters in the foreground in front of distant cities and skyscrapers, speak as much to post-apocalyptic cinema as it does westerns, or cyberpunk. This is a poster that truly stands out with colour and mise-en-sc&egrave;ne alone. A red title-card is usually coded towards horror elements. If you are familiar with&nbsp;Smoczynska&#39;s genre-bending The Lure, a cute, violent, mythology-drenched...
