Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola continues to make irresistibly entertaining genre flicks, including the inspiration for this week's 'Over Your Dead Body.'

Cory McAbee is a conundrum, both as an artist and as a subject for a Sound and Vision. Always on the periphery of mainstream indie cinema he is the true example of an outsider indie artist. His cinematic work is singular, truly oddball and extremely great. The conundrum is this: what kind of artist is McAbee? And could we call some of his art music videos, which is after all the main subject of this editorial? Cory McAbee has a singular voice, and is a jack of all trades. He writes his movies, acts in them,...

Growing considerably over the last five years, the Calgary Underground Film Festival&nbsp;(CUFF) has been continuing its mission as a fan-focused festival. Simultaneously, it has steadily increased the number of Canadian and International talents converging on the city for 11 days of socializing and cinema with its subversive curation. It is second only to Montreal&#39;s Fantasia for this kind of smorgasbord of genre programming in Canada. CUFF, in its 23rd year, has become the de facto gateway to offbeat cinema oddities for Canada&rsquo;s mid-west. A mixture of&nbsp;documentary and fiction features from the festival circuit that would not otherwise grace screens in this part of the country, it is a showcase and launch pad for the work of Alberta talent, and industry gathering. Every year, the...

After writer/director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran were appointed as the new co-heads of DC Studios in November 2022, plans for the studio's rebooted slate began to take shape, with details about upcoming projects gradually emerging. In 2023, it was announced that Andy Muschietti, known for directing the It films and series, would helm The Brave and the Bold. It's 2026 now, and the film still hasn't entered the production phase yet, though The Hollywood Reporter confirmed this past January that Muschietti was still attached to the project, with Christina Hodson (The Flash) tapped to write. Even so, the film has the power to influence people with its waiting time, as DC fans cannot hold their excitement. It will be the first DC film...

    <title>Sound and Vision: Edgar Wright</title>

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at selected music videos by Edgar Wright. Somehow it is a wonder that Edgar Wright has never done a full blown animation feature, nor a full-on traditional musical, especially when looking at his music video output. In his early and recent music video work, he fully embraces animation as a medium, and the musical as a genre, sometimes mixing both to great effect. One of his early music videos is one of two he made for Charlotte Hatherley. I want to single out Bastardo (see below), where he uses minimal animation and the now somewhat archaic medium of photographed comic books. Bastardo shows the...

There is ample white space, and the edges of the wings bleeding out in complementary colours. All sorts of small details add up to a greater whole: the absolutely perfect placement of a studio laurel, the small bit of text of the distribution company at the top, and the above the line talent at the bottom. No credit block though. (boo-urns!)&nbsp; I love the lighting and the shadow of the hand touching the...

Presented by Film at Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art, the 55th edition of New Directors/New Films takes place from April 8 through April 19, 2026, with filmmakers scheduled to attend in person. With a focus on innovative cinema that sets the stage for the future of film, the festival champions filmmakers with distinctive visions and bold new ideas that push the art form into new terrain. This year&rsquo;s selection will introduce 24 features and 10 shorts, including festival winners and favorites from Cannes, Sundance, Locarno, Venice, Berlinale, Rotterdam, Toronto, San Sebasti&aacute;n, and more. Screenings take place at FLC&rsquo;s Walter Reade Theater and MoMA&rsquo;s Titus theaters. Below are some of the films I had a privilege to preview:...

One of a pair of character posters for Kane Parson&#39;s upcoming, creepy-pasta meets liminal terror horror film, Backrooms, that places Academy Award-nominated actors into some unorthodox and tight framing.&nbsp;&nbsp; The original poster for the big-screen blow up of the YouTube series of mystery-box meets by way of found footage viral videos with a dedicated cult following, perhaps leaned too far and too clean into negative space, to the point of being novel, but rather boring. This one, which has more texture, more grain, and a distressed&nbsp;Renate Reinsve, with unkempt hair, fingernails of unequal length, pushed into the sickly yellow wallpaper that is the hallmark of the series, is a far better use of said negative space, and you feel the negative here more fulsome, more...

The first-person cinematography, with shaky camerawork and low-quality footage, might have looked amateurish, but it proved to have a massive fanbase, showing that nonlinear storytelling can succeed rather than fail. High-profile indie hits and hybrid films like Shelby...

A fine vertical teaser is this, the key art for the long awaited return of David Robert Mitchell. After the instant cult success of It Follows, he failed to connect with a mass audience with the sprawling neo-noir conspiracy oriented Under The Silver Lake. Now, 8 years later, and teaming up with J.J. Abrams Bad Robot and Warner Brothers comes a science fiction survival picture with A list stars, and a high concept.&nbsp;&nbsp; But let us talk about the poster, shall we? An overhead, drone-ish shot of neat and tidy suburbia, mangled by what appears to be a giant lizard or dinosaur. Like a modern urban protest, the title card is painted vertically on the street that divides the neat and ticky-tacky homes (&quot;little boxes...

The 33rd edition of the SXSW Film and Television Festival announced their Audience Award winners, led by Jorma Taccone's Over Your Dead Body in the Headliner section, Robb Boardman's Plantman & Blondie: A Dress Up Gang Film in the Narrative Feature Competition, and The Ascent, directed by Edward Drake, Scott Veltri, Francis Cronin, in the Documentary Feature Competition. Dave Boyle's Never After Dark won the Audience Award in the Midnighter section. Check out all the Audience Award winners here. Our in-person coverage was led by my hard-working fellow editor J Hurtado. Due to a late-breaking acute bronchitis attack, I was unable to make the trip, but I did my best to contribute remote coverage, and contributing writer Daniel Eagan also reviewed a film remotely. <title>Sound And Vision: Aidan Zamiri</title>

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at selected music videos by Aidan Zamiri. Aidan Zamiri named his first feature film The Moment. In this mockumentary, based on Charli XCX's Brat album- and tour-role-out, the notion of being an 'it'-person and being culturally relevant becomes bleakly comical and quietly unnerving. The idea that you, as a person, could come to be described as 'the moment', an ethereal disembodied notion signifying imminent death, is enough to send Charli XCX spiraling. Cultural cachet and relevance is what happens to be the name of the game for Aidan Zamiri, who himself could be described as an 'it'-person and who has turned his directorial fame...
