Six months down, six to go! The first half of 2026 was full of boundary-pushing blockbusters that changed the way Hollywood filmmakers think of modern audiences. But the year's biggest cinematic swings are still to come as Hollywood gears up for a crowded finish, and expectations have never been higher or even riskier. I have compiled a list of 12 wide-release films that could define the second half of 2026, as did Obsession (2026) and Backrooms (2026) for the first half. Disclosure Day Disclosure Day is a sci-fi thriller directed by Steven Spielberg with Emily Blunt and Josh Connor in the cast. The story follows a contest to publish the government's highly confidential evidence of life beyond Earth that has been hidden for years. The...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we discuss two odd music videos by John Carney. John Carney has made a name for himself as a director of films in which music is heavily featured. He broke through with the drama Once, which starred Glen Hansard, lead singer of The Frames, as a busker on the streets of Dublin, who falls in love with a Czech woman who is also a musician (played by Markéta Irglová), in a relationship that centers around music and miscommunication. You see them falling for each other, through playing songs together. Irglová and Hansard had such a natural chemistry, that they later started a relationship for a few...

<title>Echoes: With BACKROOMS and OBSESSION, The Internet Is Literally Bleeding into Real Life</title>

The way Hollywood is taking shape these days is getting pretty trippy. Only two highlighted trends are in view at the moment: the interminably divisive debate over AI and the two buzziest internet-borne movies taking over modern audiences. Hollywood is confronting its traditional ways of filmmaking, injecting fresh steroids to please the cinegoers. Backrooms and Obsession come from two internet-based filmmakers. It&#39;s a wonderful use of the cream coloured siding, as a kind of dual negative space.&nbsp; Both the openness and the villain is is contrast to star&nbsp;Adria Arjona in black interiors, framed by the window...

Today we have a rather abstract poster from Vietnam-based visual artist Khang Giate&nbsp;for the forthcoming mega-action picture&nbsp; The Furious. Given the &#39;dog-pile&#39; martial arts style practically pioneered by this film (it is indeed something to behold) this poster does a bang-up job of offering a taste, here hand-drawn and garnished with plenty of the red stuff.&nbsp;&nbsp; The title is oozing it. Props for the &quot;the&quot; tucked in the space of the R in the title card here, to keep it visually to a single word.&nbsp; The background is unusually geometric, like impact-cracked pains of panes of glass. Foregrounded is a very angry fellow, wielding a hammer with intent. The knives and limbs and faces below mean business as well.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Furious is a no-nonsense kind of action...

<title>Echoes: 2026 Might Be the Biggest Movie Year in a Decade. Or a Nasty Face-Plant. </title>

For the first time in years, 2026 could prove to be electrifying. The three major franchise empires are at war as they are trying to redefine themselves, especially with new DC Studios co-heads, Peter Safran and James Gunn. It's getting crazy among DC Studios, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm. Worldwide, modern audiences have fallen victim to so-called fast content -- hello, TikTok! -- and their attention spans are smashed. It is much more challenging for major studios to keep them hooked and give them something show-stopping to buy the tickets. Promotional materials need to wow viewers, so that they rush to theaters. Then the film needs to be emotionally authentic, so as to hit them in their gut. Studios are now on a hamster wheel of...

    <title>Sound And Vision: Timur Bekmambetov</title>

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we take a look at several music videos directed by Timur Bekmambetov. I rarely discuss tie-in music videos, music videos that are made to accompany a feature. Not because I am against them, but because I think the main reason for the existence of the Sound and Vision is the disparity between a filmmaker's output in music videos and features. If a music video is already tied into a feature, there is not much more for me to say or compare. Rarely is there something interesting to add. Enter Timur Bekmambetov. He made many music videos early in his career, mostly for the singer Chicherina....

Allow me to take you into a bewitching world of animation styled by Laika. Laika is known for visually satisfying aesthetics with soft and comforting hues that haven't been witnessed in any other animated films produced by several other studios. I am talking about the award-winning Laika Studios that gave us ParaNorman (2012), Coraline (2009), and Kubo and the Two Strings (2016). Its latest, Wildwood, is breaking records with its teaser trailer views reaching up to 85M views, even more than Dune 3 and The Odyssey views combined! Wildwood is an adaptation of a children's fantasy novel written by Colin Meloy of The Decemberists and illustrated by Carson Ellis, first published in 2011. Located in Portland, Oregon, U.S., Laika's journey started 21 years ago and...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at selected music videos by Gus van Sant. Gus van Sant is a weird director, but you wouldn't necessarily know it from watching his feature work. It's hard to pin-point a main style, as he has evolved through several eras of his work, going from New Queer Cinema-style films like Mala Noche, My Own Private Idaho and Even Cowgirls Get the Blues towards highly commercial melodrama fare like Good Will Hunting, before heading into James Benning-inspired Slow Cinema like Gerry, Elephant and Last Days. Detours like his oddball shot-for-shot Hitchcock-remake Psycho aside, he now is mostly churning out fairly rote (political) dramas which...

    <title>Echoes: Ari Aster&apos;s Movies Aren&apos;t Horror Anymore -- They&apos;re Something Stranger</title>

Hereditary (2018) came as a shockingly pleasant surprise when it first hit the big screen. Ari Aster was up to something that no one could have imagined before. Audiences weren't aware that monsters could be much more than Freddy Krueger invading our dreams or virus-mutated zombies, something that could stay with them even after stepping out of the theater. Aster likes to distance himself from the traditional horror pack and focus on scares that are embedded within inescapable grief, dysfunctional family dynamics, and inherited trauma. The famous dinner table fight in Hereditary is a true depiction of trauma where Annie (Toni Collette) explodes at her son, Peter (Alex Wolff), after the death of his sister. During Christmas, things got rather busy in my household and as the International Film Festival Rotterdam was right after, I totally forgot to show you all the pretty fantastic-looking Blu-ray boxset of the second season of Arcane, the pretty fantastic League-of-Legends-inspired animated series. Well, it's a few months onward and I was wondering if I should actually still do this article. But I see this set for sale online still, sometimes going for astronomic prices, and I can imagine people being on the fence about whether to buy this or not. So, consider this to be a bit of extra consumer information. Also, I did write about the boxset for the first season so it would feel like unfinished business not to mention this one....

<title>Echoes: Empty Malls, Endless Hallways -- The New Face of Horror for Gen Z </title>

Distributor Arrow has released its fourth boxset of Shaw Brothers films. The previous three were mentioned here in the Pretty Packaging articles, and this one looks very, VERY similar to them. So I wondered: should I put up an article for this release? I mean, look at them...you might be forgiven in thinking that three is enough. The thing is... this might be my favorite one yet, and that has to do with the contents. The Shaw Brothers studios released a lot of weird horror films in the seventies and eighties, absurdly entertaining films of a unique flavor. And while the earlier Shawscope boxsets focused on Martial Arts and historical swordplay, this one goes for the horror. From Black Magic (1+2) to Hex, to its...
