Our primary focus remains the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada, but not all of us could make the trip this year, so instead we cast our eyes on what opened in movie theaters today. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey continues to dominate social media and online media coverage, and deservedly so. Beyond that very large elephant in the room, we hasten to point out that other worthy genre films are worth watching. The new releases are highlighted by new films by Nicolas Winding Refn and Hirokazu Kore-eda. Alternately, a serial killer classic by Michael Mann will be returning to select theaters in an undoubtedly chilling 4K restoration, as well as the intriguing Australian thriller Cruel Hands and a new take on a legendary puppet,...

The sheer volume of this poster is impressive in and of itself.&nbsp;&nbsp; A hybrid documentary on the famous fashion designer-philosopher, and the so-called &quot;King of Cashmere&quot; Brunello Cucinellii, from the director of the cinema classic Cinema Paradiso, is enough to get many into the cinema, and dropping this marvel of a one-sheet is brilliant icing on the cake. The title and text and credit block at the bottom has the good sense to stay out of the way of this image, and is tucked down in the shadows of the stacks of books. Some local stars debated among themselves that Pakistani content is not ready to meet the standards of global streaming giants, due to the absence of widely relatable narratives or technical expertise. Ochre and clay and sulphur, oh my!&nbsp; The poster for Agnieszka Smoczynska&#39;s big budget Artificial Intelligence dystopian sci-fi thriller, Hot Spot, is from&nbsp;Gravillis, the design house who did yeoman&#39;s work on the campaigns for Sinners and Obsession in the past year.&nbsp; The wavy, reality distorted deserted landscapes -- the tagline, &quot; The system Is unstable&quot; in a white computer, but not too-computer font seems to confirm this -- and posed characters in the foreground in front of distant cities and skyscrapers, speak as much to post-apocalyptic cinema as it does westerns, or cyberpunk. This is a poster that truly stands out with colour and mise-en-sc&egrave;ne alone. A red title-card is usually coded towards horror elements. If you are familiar with&nbsp;Smoczynska&#39;s genre-bending The Lure, a cute, violent, mythology-drenched...

The Fantasia International Film Festival, North America&#39;s current largest genre festival runs from July 16 to August 2, in its 30th edition. We arrive at the penultimate day of the 2026 Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival, located in the heart of Switzerland, where the only Swiss festival dedicated to genre films has held sway for the past week. Overlooking a beautiful lake, Neuchatel is known as the center of the Swiss watch industry, and is perfect for strolling at a leisurely pace. The festival takes advantage of its setting with time set aside every day for exploring board games and various virtual worlds. Throughout the festival, varied theatrical events have also been staged. Today, for example, is Arts de rue : Réaction en chaîne", which has a very inviting description: "Samuelito creates a whole obstacle course full of twists and turns and adventure to make candy fly...

The New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) and Film at Lincoln Center today unveiled the second wave of programming for its landmark 25th edition, adding more than 40 films to an already wide-ranging lineup, with very special final titles still to come. North America&rsquo;s largest festival of contemporary Japanese film returns for its 19th year this summer at Japan Society! Take a closer look at over 30 curated films from across Japan, featuring major award-winners, indie darlings, up-and-coming filmmakers, restorations, documentaries, short films, anime and more. We are halfway through 2026 already, a year which has been shaping up so far as an interesting one to say the least. I have already heard several people say they like the first half of 2026 better than all of 2025. Strong words! And July also means that we can once more make a Top 10 list. This time, 23 of our writers contributed, and they created a huge list of 75 titles. That's the kind of numbers we normally only get at the end of a year! As always, don't take the list too seriously. The choices here are very subjective, and our writers haven't seen all the films in the list (yet). So what does this Top 10 tell you, as a...

Like Saul Bass did for Hitchcock, design firm BOND does for Statham. Who does not love a long bit of perspective-based text in their movie poster? If only the design did not have the studio mandate to put &quot; From The Director Of&quot; to sully the pure minimalism here, or the courage enough to leave Statham&#39;s name from hovering above the Mutiny title card, and let his tiny form hanging off a shipping container do everything that needs to be done for the onlooker.&nbsp; Jason Statham, the last action star who can consistently put out B+ action pictures in the cinema with a full wide release, fighting the good fight in the middle of the ocean, is simply enough here, along with the requisite &#39;tilt&#39; to...

The Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival, hereafter referred to as Neuchatel 2026, is "the only Swiss festival dedicated to genre films," per their official description. "The event is mainly devoted to a specific film genre: fantasy. This main theme is complemented by two others: digital creation and Asian cinema." Now that we've set the table, what is in store for today (Friday, 3 July)? The Asian competition begins with a film that sets a very high bar: Yuen Woo-ping's truly awesome action-adventure Blades of the Guardians, which very much rewards the big-screen experience. Our review by Rino Li began: "Yuen Woo-ping may not be the most prominent director of action films, but he is certainly one of the greatest martial arts directors when it comes...

<title>Echoes: Zombies Are Just the Beginning: Why Great Writing Is Pakistan&apos;s Next Big Challenge</title>

The recent release of the first-ever Pakistani zombie horror movie, Zombeid (2026), marks a big win for the Pakistani film industry. However, the film has been criticized at length for its shallow story writing and thin, rather basic plot. (Read our review by Simon Ramshaw.) Lollywood is full of films that are mostly released on Eid for commercial premieres, as most of the country's film culture has thrived on box office earnings on Eid. Hence, the stories have been formed that should appeal to families and are deemed age-appropriate for people belonging to all age groups. Movies like Love Guru (2025) and Na-Baligh Afraad (2024) have attracted a significant amount of box office earnings as cinegoers flock to their nearby theaters to have a good...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we discuss two distinct music videos by Yoshihiro Nishimura. Yoshihiro Nishimura passed away a few weeks ago, at age 59. The director of films like Tokyo Gore Police, Meatball Machine Kudoku, Mutant Girl Squad, Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl and Hell Driver was also known as a special effects wizard. Often dubbed the Tom Savini of Japan, a typical Nishimura joint is full of surreal and irreverent body horror, gory action, slapsticky humor, and a lot of objectified women in scantily clad attire. Nishimura made two music videos that divide the elements he is most known for between the two. The 50 Kaitenz's Killer (see below)...

The final weekend of June offers the third film by Olivia Wilde, described by our critic as "adult entertainment," an ethereal horror drama by a 'daring new voice' in the indie space, an autobiographical portrait of family origins, and a superhero action-adventure that features "playful nihilism." Neat! I have some serious catching up to do. Yesterday, I watched one of the four new releases, the only one of the four that was playing at my local movie house, and agree completely with our critic's review. And I didn't even realize that "playful nihilism" is a thing! Please see our summary below, with links to our reviews of each film. If you can, get out of the house (or apartment or townhouse or villa) and see...

<title>Friday One Sheet: KLARA AND THE SUN</title>

Christian imagery is the theme here for the Columbia Picture adaptation of Kazou Ishiguro&#39;s novel, Klara And The Sun. In the dystopian science fiction story, where advances in genetic engineering have divided humans into strict, isolated social classes, an obsolete android ends up with a sick girl for whom she was purchased. The teal and yellow (blue skies ahead) colour palette, along with Jenna Ortega&#39;s saintly visage, &nbsp;suggests more optimism than grimness. The halo invokes holiness, divine favour, and the presence of God&#39;s grace. The teaser poster below (no credit block, folks) from BLT Communications foregrounds mood and minimalism. <title>Echoes: KPOP DEMON HUNTERS One Year Later, Rediscovering Its Shamanic Inspirations</title>

It's been just over one year since one of Netflix's crowning masterpieces came out on June 20, 2025. I'm talking about KPop Demon Hunters, whose head-banging songs and powerful storyline gripped audiences of all ages and all regions of the world alike. The creator, Maggie Kang, wanted to stay true to her roots, and this is the reason Shamanism, one of the oldest Korean cultural and spiritual traditions, is spotted everywhere in the film. Rumi's the Great Four Together sword, Mira's curved sword called Gok-Do, Zoey's snazzy set of knives, even Derpie the Tiger and Magpie all have symbolic interpretations of their own. Setting the background in the prologue immediately takes viewers into the fantastical premise and couldn't have been better paired with the infectious...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we discuss Young Cardamom & HAB's #1 Spice directed by Mira Nair. This entry of Sound and Vision will win you trivia rounds in very specific film themed pub quizes. It is an amalgam of fun facts that starts with the current mayor of New York. Zohran Mamdani is young, hip and a person who connects to the normal, everyday New Yorker. Fun fact number 1: You might have heard he was a rapper under the moniker Young Cardamom before he became a mayor. But did you also know he had a song in a Disney live-action production? Queen of Katwe is a film about a...

This fresh, and quite minimalist, poster for&nbsp;Victoria Trofimenko&#39;s Bonding, may have the record for the most shovels on a single poster. Hidden agendas and digging are the theme here&nbsp;as three estranged siblings reunite at a remote Colorado ranch. The key art is from Fable, a marketing agency and design house we featured in the past around their collage poster for Neo-Nazi period piece The Order. Going with a distressed orange colour in a nearly monochrome palette, it favours a nice verticals (anchored by the symbolic shovel that both the blade and the handle extending just beyond the fram -- and loads of negative space (you know, for digging). This allows for a lot of text on the right side of the design, including the above...

<title>Echoes: 12 Wide Releases That Could Define the Second Half of 2026 </title>

Six months down, six to go! The first half of 2026 was full of boundary-pushing blockbusters that changed the way Hollywood filmmakers think of modern audiences. But the year's biggest cinematic swings are still to come as Hollywood gears up for a crowded finish, and expectations have never been higher or even riskier. I have compiled a list of 12 wide-release films that could define the second half of 2026, as did Obsession (2026) and Backrooms (2026) for the first half. Disclosure Day Disclosure Day is a sci-fi thriller directed by Steven Spielberg with Emily Blunt and Josh Connor in the cast. The story follows a contest to publish the government's highly confidential evidence of life beyond Earth that has been hidden for years. The...
