Werner Herzog needs no introduction. He has been one of cinema&#39;s most fascinating and deliberate risk-takers for over five decades of extraordinary cinema. The enlightenments he discovers through his pursuit of the &quot;ecstatic truth&quot; are often intense and absurd in varying measure. Well into his 80s at this point, he has not slowed down in his filmmaking, and seemed to have no reservations traipsing around the &quot;terra incognito&quot; of the rugged and uninhabited Angolan wilderness along with his current documentary subject, South African biological conservationist Dr. Steve Boyes.&nbsp; Boyes has been an advocate and activist for the preservation of the lakes and flora and fauna of the Bi&eacute; Plateau in Central Angola.&nbsp;Since 2015, Boyes has led the National Geographic Okavango Wilderness Project, a collection of...

During a roundtable discussion near the Berlinale Palast, Bouzid shared her personal perspective on the situation of queer people in Tunisia, as well as her understanding of the characters she created. In this half-suspense, half-drama story, she weaves what she witnessed growing up in a fairly conservative social environment into the fabric of the narrative. Screen Anarchy: Why...

<title>Berlinale 2026 Interview: QUEEN AT SEA Director Lance Hammer on the Ethical Dilemma of Alzheimer&apos;s</title>

After an 18-year hiatus, Lance Hammer makes a remarkable return to the director&rsquo;s chair following his Sundance Award&ndash;winning debut Ballast. For this long-awaited project, he assembled what he describes as his dream cast, led by Juliette Binoche and the outstanding Anna Calder-Marshall and Tom Courtenay, who jointly received the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance at this year&rsquo;s Berlinale. The film also won the Silver Bear Jury Prize, marking recognition from Wim Wenders&rsquo; jury and audiences alike for its sensitive yet uncompromising exploration of Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease. By depicting sexual behaviour involving an elderly person living with dementia, a subject many may find controversial, Queen at Sea confronts a profound ethical dilemma suspended between desire and vulnerability. The film raises urgent questions about autonomy, dignity, and...

It was exciting enough to see the new Gore Verbinski film, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don&rsquo;t Die, months ahead of time at Fantastic Fest 2025. But I was shocked to hear I&rsquo;d actually scored a face-to-face interview. It underscored for me just how much I love the man&rsquo;s work. He&rsquo;s the kind of director who does big mainstream movies about decidedly odd stuff. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl was based a theme park ride and introduced one of the most eccentric characters ever. &nbsp;Verbiniski has been all over the genre map leaving solid marks along his path. Mouse Hunt (1997) is a marvelous bit of stunt-laden slapstick that makes great use of stars Nathan Lane, Lee Evans and Christopher Walken. The...

There are few filmmaking visionaries whose work has touched more than Yuen Woo-ping. A triple-threat stuntman, choreographer and director, his illustrious career began hand-in-hand with Jackie Chan&#39;s, helming the seminal&nbsp;Snake in the Eagle&#39;s Shadow&nbsp;and&nbsp;Drunken Master&nbsp;in 1978 and supercharging the Hong Kong film industry with a new brand astonishing martial artistry and bawdy comedy. His eye for high-impact and idiosyncratic fighting styles took him to Hollywood, lending his talents to the Wachowski Sisters&#39;&nbsp;Matrix&nbsp;series and Quentin Tarantino&#39;s Kill Bill&nbsp;diptych, projects which bookended the unprecedented international success of his iconic wirework in Ang Lee&#39;s&nbsp;Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.&nbsp; After a ten-year gap, we at Screen Anarchy were overjoyed to be able to talk to him a second time for the release of his new blockbuster, Blades of the Guardians,...

The crowd at Fantastic Fest last year found Whistle a more than worthy festival closer. True, the film follows the tried-and-true formula of kids in a group fucking around and finding out. But man, does Whistle have fun finding out. Boasting some truly memorable, just godawful kills, this cursed object horror movie puts yet another notch in the belt of both screenwriter Owen Egerton and director Corin Hardy whose previous films The Hallow (2015) and The Nun (2018) made me eager to see this one.&nbsp; My own experience with Hardy&rsquo;s work started with The Hallow, a chilling folk horror meets family drama. Next, I saw The Nun (2018), a religious based horror film full of atmosphere, an interesting story and the sense that a new...

The French writer, playwright, professor, actor and director Guillame Nicloux is no stranger to the International Film Festival Rotterdam. In the past 30 years, he visited several times, and his films have often featured in the festival's program. This year he brought a special treat for the festival: the world première of his new thriller Mi Amor, starring Pom Klementieff and Benoît Magimel as a DJ and her employer who are looking for a missing person in the Canary Islands. You can read my positive review here. The day after the première, we met Guillame Nicloux at the press center of the festival for an interview. Note that some mild spoilers for Mi Amor come up in the interview, but nothing too disrupting (I think)....

A biopic about one of the most famous musicians in rock, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere avoids the standard life story formula to focus on the trauma of creating the album Nebraska. With Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen, and Jeremy Strong as his manager Jon Landau, the movie pins Nebraska to the singer&#39;s troubled childhood relationship with his father Douglas (Stephen Graham). Writer and director Scott Cooper and cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi brought the film for a special screening to the EnergaCAMERIMAGE film festival in Toruń, Poland. The two have collaborated on five features, including Hostiles and The Pale Blue Eye. Cooper also wrote and directed the music-themed Crazy Heat, while Takayanagi shot such films as Silver Linings Playbook and the Oscar-winning Spotlight. ScreenAnarchy: What...

I sat down with internationally acclaimed Canadian Swiss filmmaker, Peter Mettler, to discuss his latest hybrid documentary, his seven-hour magnum opus,&nbsp; While the Green Grass Grows: A Diary in Seven Parts (2025), which enjoyed its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Since then, it&rsquo;s been a busy time for the filmmaker, what with the subsequent landmark retrospective at TIFF&rsquo;s Lightbox in October and other screenings already scheduled around the world. The film recently screened over two days at International Documentary Film&nbsp;Festival&nbsp;Amsterdam&nbsp;(IDFA)&nbsp;2025. Currently, the film will be presented in Montr&eacute;al at RIDM (Montr&eacute;al International Documentary Festival) in one full marathon screening on November 22 and then will be shown in two parts across November 24 and 25 at Cin&eacute;ma Public. The public is invited...

Peter Martin put it perfectly when he summed up King Ivory with a focus on its three leads in his article on this weekend's new releases: "James Badge Dale, who brings simmering intensity to every role, Ben Foster, who has a great swaggering sneer, and Michael Mando, who was absolutely fantastic in Better Call Saul, lead a crime picture that promises a little something extra." I had the opportunity to talk with those three incredibly talented actors and ask some broad questions about genre and thematic interests, and some more specific questions about King Ivory, which tackles the fentanyl trade's impact on some very different families. You can read our conversation, which has been edited for length and clarity. below. ScreenAnarchy: So I know that...

I almost freaked out when I found out I was going to talk to special effects makeup legend Bill Corso. That&rsquo;s not a pun, although you might think so, given that the interview was in support of Umbrella Entertainment&#39;s incredible 4K Box Set of Freaked (1993) which I&rsquo;ll be reviewing separately. Any self-respecting film fan would freak out a little at the thought. He took home an Academy Award for A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) and he&rsquo;s worked on almost every Jim Carey movie since. He was also Oscar nominated for both Click (2006) and Foxcatcher (2014). He&rsquo;s also been a go-to guy for Harrison Ford on multiple occasions. None of this is by accident. Check out his work on The Salton Sea (2002),...
